Like The Archive, Taskpaper deals with plain text but doesn’t have a companion iOS app. I’ve found it difficult to find a task manager/todo app that really suits me, but although it’s early days Taskpaper seems to be working well. My other main use for Writer is as a Taskpaper client. The only thing that doesn’t seem possible is to link notes - or at least if that is possible, I can’t see a way that wouldn’t be tedious. I wrote about this in another post, so I won’t go into great detail here, but using Writer means I can read and edit my Zettelkasten notes anywhere. The Archive doesn’t have an iOS companion app, which means I need a workaround if I want to access my Zettelkasten notes when I’m away from my desk. Using Writer means I can read and edit my Zettelkasten notes anywhere Like my Zettelkasten app The Archive, Writer just creates a simple plain text file, and there are many circumstances when that’s all I want. While Ulysses handles text files, and these can also be indexed by Spotlight or Alfred, they are nonetheless within a proprietary format. These can be found quickly and easily using Alfred or Spotlight, and viewed in TextEdit for reference. One is for producing relatively short documents that I just want to keep in a plain text file. Having used this app on and off over the years, I’ve discovered Writer works for me for quite specific purposes. Other apps claim to offer similar features, but none does so quite as well as Writer. For me, iA Writer has two attributes that set it apart: simplicity and plain text purity. There are many choices, and the various apps have their own specialisms, features, pros and cons. For fiction writing we might use Scrivener for blogging iA Writer or Ulysses. These days text editors are as numerous and varied as the purposes for which they are used. And with a lack of money, and with only a few possibilities with not too many options.ĭespite my love of analogue processes and a certain Luddite resistance to digital tools and “frictionless workflows” - we all know a little bit of friction is a good thing - the move to electronic writing was inevitable and irresistible. And the artist’s output can be fed by limitations.Ĭreativity sometimes starts with a deadline. And trust me, I was very serious.īut perhaps like the shift of music media from vinyl to CDs, then to digital formats, what many of us were gaining in convenience was offset by lost opportunities to explore paths on the creative journey. It was just the thing to do for anyone serious about their writing. Every professional writer worth her salt was going electronic. When I first started writing as an adult back in the early 1990s, I first used a typewriter, then moved to Word Perfect when I bought a PC. IA Writer has two main attributes that set it apart: simplicity, and plain text purity With its simple aesthetics and no-nonsense setup, I immediately felt at home. The developers did away with this several years ago, which I think is a shame, as this added a subtle layer of interest. I also liked the paper-like texture used as a background in the early days. Reader, I’m easily distracted and love typewriters.Ī pure writing app, it lacked customisation options, and had a beautiful monospace font. I was immediately attracted by its typewriter-like interface and lack of distractions. I’ve owned a copy of Writer since its first lunch in 2010. Here’s my experience with Writer from Information Architects, and how I use it now. The app features support for a variety of different video formats, including mp4, mkv, avi, and a lot more.I’ve mentioned iA Writer in several previous posts, which indicated the app deserves coverage of its own. VLCĭid you know that the popular VLC media player is also available as a Windows 10 UWP app? Well, it is and it looks a whole lot better than the desktop version – that’s one reason why you should get it right away.

From mindset shifts to simple techniques that actually work, designers share their top decluttering tips that’ll make the process easy and-dare we say it-enjoyable. Now that you know the importance of decluttering, here's how to tackle it in your own home. She adds that while it's possible to initially organize your home without decluttering, “maintaining an organized system is unlikely, because what you actually need and use is drowned out by what you don’t.” Once you declutter, then you can organize and “create a system for your belongings,” according to La Fond. Play icon The triangle icon that indicates to play “It’s an audit of your space and your things-basically, the process of deciding what to keep, toss, donate, or sell,” she says. La Fond says that decluttering is actually the step you take before organizing, since it will help you decide how to best design your space with what you have left. It’s also worth noting that there’s a big difference between organizing and decluttering. “This just causes them to get overwhelmed, because people often begin with an area of their home that carries a lot of attachment for them-they get distracted, bogged down with decisions, or become so emotional that they can’t move forward.” “One of the biggest mistakes I find that people make when they’re beginning to declutter their space is taking on too much, too fast,” says Ashley La Fond, founder of home organizing company Of Space + Mind. While most of us could use a Marie Kondo-approved purge, it can be tough to know where to even begin, so we asked designers for their best decluttering tips. The good news? Decluttering your home can bring in new energy and help you feel much more organized and less stressed. Things we don't love-like stacks of old receipts in a junk drawer or scratchy towels in the linen closet-not only take up space, but also make our home a less desirable place to live. If you've ever looked around your home and thought “I have way too much stuff” or “I need to get rid of everything and start from scratch,” you're certainly not alone. For decades, “untranslatable” disorders like these were studied as mere scientific curiosities, which existed in parts of the world where people apparently didn’t know any better. Koro is considered a culture-bound syndrome – a mental illness that only exists in certain societies. Is this what caused the Salem witch trials. It affected 57 people, including eight women, for whom it tends to manifest as a fear that their nipples are retreating into the body. Koro has a history stretching back thousands of years, but the most recent outbreak occurred in 2015, in eastern India. In South-east Asia and China, it’s common enough that it even has a name: “koro”, possibly – and rather graphically – after the Javanese word for tortoise, referring to how it looks when they retract their heads into their shells. It pops up fairly regularly in certain cultures across the globe. In the end, over 500 people sought treatment at public hospitals.Īs it happens, the fear of losing one’s penis is more mainstream than you might think. Though public health officials scrambled to contain the hysteria outbreak, explaining that it was caused by “psychological fear” alone, it didn’t work. Specifically, the locals were suspicious of meat from pigs that had been vaccinated in a programme the government had imposed on Singaporean farms. The word on the street was that the sudden penis withering was caused by something the men had eaten. Unscrupulous local doctors cashed in, recommending various injections and traditional remedies. Men desperately tried to hold onto their genitals, using whatever they had to hand – rubber bands, clothes pegs, string. Thousands of men had spontaneously become convinced that their penises were shrinking away – and that the loss would eventually kill them. In the preceding days, a peculiar phenomenon had swept across Singapore. “DO NOT FEAR KORO,” screamed the headline in the Straits Times newspaper on November 7, 1967.
